Essay:
Topic: Dumbfounded
Sweet revenge

Daniel hung his head to down in shame as another student from the academy walked past, portraying subservience and respect for the other. He had to keep up the pretense. Many would not have thought of how powerful and skillful he had grown in the past months after Shane had beaten him in the dueling ring, left him bleeding and close to unconsciousness there. He had been immediately taken to the medical center where he had spent the next two weeks healing. When he got out, the first thing that came to mind was that he wanted Shane to pay for all he did. He wanted him to hurt, to feel all the pain and humiliation that he had inflicted to him all the past months.
He may have wanted revenge, but swordsmen did have a code of conduct they had to follow at the academy and Daniel did most certainly not want to be expelled. Although Shane had been warned many times and had come close to killing a few students, many of those who had been defeated by him would not dare stand up to him.
The instructors liked Shane too. He was their pet student and all the instructors wanted to claim credit for the powerful swordsman that they had trained. Alas, the empire needed every knight they could to defeat a neighbouring land at war and could not afford to expel the best student, even if he was the worst behaved.
For the past months, Daniel had been pushing himself beyond his limits. At every dueling lesson, he paid crucial attention to the detail in the moves that their instructor was teaching. Every angle, detail and strength emphasized behind each blow or parry. He studied Shane’s movements and style every time he went into a dueling ring and defeated another opponent, slowly climbing his way up to the ranks of the Masters. Daniel carefully plotted his move, and the day that he would take Shane down.
Another student walked past, Daniel bowed his head down again in pretense. He smiled under his the hoods of his robes, victory was near, and Shane’s defeat was drawing close. He made his way towards the dueling ring, in anticipation for the lesson to start.
The clouds of gray gathered as the students in the academy formed a circle around the open ground. Moments later, raindrops started pelting their skin and robes. Their instructor for the day strode out and announced that it students could now call out their partners for dueling in the circle. Before anyone could call out, Daniel shoved his way to the front and shouted:
"Shane! I challenge you!”
There was a shocked murmur in the crowd and the reply “I accept” came.
Daniel stripped off his wet robe and drew his training blade. It was shaped like the hand-a-half sword that he preferred; only that it was severely blunted at all its sharp edges. Shane had entered the ring by then and too drew his sword, the same kind as the one that Daniel preferred, and stripped his robe off. Daniel faced him with hatred, wanting revenge, but careful to tread lightly. Revenge could blind him to common sense. He recalled what his instructor had taught him during their painful duels.
Never turn your back on your opponent
Both men circled the edge of the ring, waiting for an opening.
This time, it was Shane who initiated the duel, closing in the gap between them in a few strides; he brought his sword up from waist level, swinging it towards Daniel’s sword hand, hoping to end the duel early. Daniel deflected the blow easily with the pommel and parried the blow away. Both men backed off a few steps. And then the air was suddenly filled with sparks as both blades crossed each other in a flurry, neither gaining advantage of each other.
Daniel kept his fury within him, letting his instincts guide his sword. He could sense Shane’s frustration as he tried again and again without avail to break through Daniel’s defenses. The class gasped at his newfound skill. His instructor’s words rang in his mind again.
He, who stands like a pillar in combat, crumbles early!
He skipped away from Shane’s swing’s, some missing by mere inches, moving so fluidly and with each movement linking to each other so flawlessly he looked as if he were dancing. He kept the fury building, his sword flashing through the rain. He had enough of pretence, he was ready to show what he REALLY had learnt for the few months. He ducked under the attack meant for his head and made his switch to offence.
Speed is what determines the result of close-up combat, not strength
Then the crowd really gasped, for they had really never seen anything like it. Daniel’s blade was suddenly everywhere at once. A viper striking at every opportunity it could find. The hunter had, suddenly, become the hunted.
Shane’s face was crimson with embarrassment and frustration, suddenly looking as if he had an important meeting somewhere else.
Anywhere else.
Daniel wasn’t going to let him off so easily. Even with his newly revealed skills, Shane was still a formidable opponent. Shane could not break through his guard and neither could he break through Shane’s, although he was beginning see that the initial surge of attacking him had weakened Shane. His slashes were no longer strong, his thrusts no longer precise. It was only a matter of time before he made a – fatal miscalculation.
Daniel had enough, releasing all his pent up frustration and fury, he unleashed it in a single attack, swinging his blade in a circle and breaking Shane’s wrist upon impact. The swordsman barely had enough time to register the pain when Daniel brought his sword back, and plunged it like a knife into his leg.
Shane screamed as white bone split across the skin, jutting out from the flesh. Blood spilled across the floor. The instructor immediately rushed forward to administer help.
Shane looked up at him, pale with shock and dumbfounded.
Daniel grinned into the sky, his classmates stared, thunderstruck about the awesome duel they had witnessed.
Ah, he thought, sweet revenge!
